SEC. 02 / TRADITIONAL / CHINA MOSAIC WATERPROOFING

China Mosaic Waterproofing in Mumbai

China mosaic is a finish of broken glazed ceramic tile pieces set in waterproofed cement mortar over a terrace. Its white, reflective surface cuts heat gain into the slab, and its hard glazed face protects the waterproofing beneath from UV and foot traffic. It is normally laid over brick bat coba rather than used as a standalone barrier.

SELECTION

When this is the right system — and when it is not

Waterproofing is a selection problem before it is an application problem. Most failures we are called to fix were the wrong system for the substrate, not a bad product.

When this is the right choice

  • Finishing layer over brick bat coba
  • Terraces where solar heat gain into the top floor is a complaint
  • Where a hard-wearing, low-maintenance, repairable surface is wanted

When it is not

  • Used alone as the waterproofing layer — it is a finish, not a barrier
  • Heavy point loads or vehicle traffic
BUILD-UP

The system, layer by layer

Every layer has a job. The ones people cut to save money are usually the ones holding the rest together.

  1. L01Coba or screed base

    Laid to fall.

  2. L02Bedding mortar15-20 mm

    Waterproofed cement mortar.

  3. L03China mosaic pieces

    Glazed face up, tight joints.

  4. L04Joint filling & polishing

    Grouted and cleaned.

SURFACE PREPARATION

Almost every failure starts here

Preparation produces nothing visible, costs real money, and is the first thing removed from a cheap quotation. It is also what decides whether the system lasts.

The coba or screed base beneath must be complete, cured and laid to fall, and should be ponding-tested before it is covered. The surface is cleaned and wetted to saturated surface-dry so the bedding mortar does not dry out prematurely.

METHOD

How we apply china mosaic waterproofing

Step by step, with the specifications each stage is held to.

  1. 01

    Test the layer beneath first

China mosaic is a finish, not a barrier. Laying it over an untested coba means any fault below is now under a hard, bonded surface that must be broken out to reach.

  2. 02

    Prepare and wet the base

Base cleaned, loose material removed, and brought to saturated surface-dry.

  3. 03

    Lay the bedding mortar

Waterproofed cement mortar at 15–20 mm, laid in workable bays so it does not skin over before the pieces are placed.

  4. 04

    Set the pieces

Broken glazed tile pieces are set glazed-face up and pressed into full contact with the bed, keeping joints tight. Spot bedding leaves hollows that crack pieces underfoot and admit water.

  5. 05

    Fill the joints

Joints are grouted with waterproofed cement and worked to full depth. Open joints let water straight into the bedding mortar, which defeats the finish entirely.

  6. 06

    Clean and cure

Surface cleaned of grout haze, then water-cured for 7 days.

  7. 07

    Tap test and pond test

The finished surface is tapped for hollowness and re-laid where hollow, then a ponding test is held with the space below observed.

MATERIALS

What goes into the system

Mosaic pieces
Broken glazed ceramic tile, laid glazed-face up for reflectivity and wear resistance.
Bedding mortar
Cement mortar with integral waterproofing compound, laid as a full bed.
Joint filler
Waterproofed cement grout worked to full joint depth.
QUALITY

What goes wrong, and what we check

These are the failure modes we are called in to fix on other people's work. The checkpoints on the right are how we avoid repeating them.

Common failure modes

  • Loose pieces from thin or dry bedding mortar
  • Open joints admitting water to the bedding
  • Laid over a substrate with no fall

Our QC checkpoints

  • Tap test for hollowness
  • Joint fill continuity
  • Post-laying water test
QUESTIONS

China Mosaic Waterproofing — questions we get asked

When is china mosaic waterproofing the wrong choice?

Used alone as the waterproofing layer — it is a finish, not a barrier Heavy point loads or vehicle traffic Selecting a system that does not match the substrate, the exposure and the movement it will see is the most expensive mistake in waterproofing, because the failure only shows up after everything above it has been built.

Why does china mosaic waterproofing fail when it is done badly?

In our experience the recurring causes are: loose pieces from thin or dry bedding mortar; open joints admitting water to the bedding; laid over a substrate with no fall. None of these are material defects — they are execution defects, which is why the same product can last for years on one building and fail in a single monsoon on another.

How do I know the work was done properly?

Ask for evidence against these checkpoints: tap test for hollowness; joint fill continuity; post-laying water test. A contractor who cannot produce them is asking you to take execution quality on trust, on work that will be buried under a finish and impossible to inspect afterwards.

How long does china mosaic waterproofing last?

The finish is renewable independently of the barrier beneath it. We would rather set that expectation honestly than quote a headline number, because the substrate condition and the standard of application matter more to the outcome than the product's own datasheet figure.

What does china mosaic waterproofing cost in Mumbai?

Cost depends on area, substrate condition, access, and how much preparation or structural repair is needed before the system can go on. We do not publish a rate per square foot, because a number quoted without seeing the building is either meaningless or misleading. The site inspection is free and produces an itemised scope you can compare against any other quotation.

Which standards apply to china mosaic waterproofing?

The relevant Indian Standards for this work are IS 3067. These cover the design, preparatory work and material requirements. Where a project specification names a different or additional standard, we work to the specification.

NEXT STEP

Book the inspection. It costs nothing and it settles the argument.

An engineer visits, finds the actual source, and tells you what the building needs and why. You get a clear scope before any money is discussed.
