Bituminous felt waterproofing builds up alternating layers of hot bitumen and reinforcing felt into a multi-ply roof barrier. It is the traditional built-up roofing method that predates modern torch-on membranes, and it remains serviceable and economical for large, simple roof areas with straightforward detailing.

When this is the right system — and when it is not
Waterproofing is a selection problem before it is an application problem. Most failures we are called to fix were the wrong system for the substrate, not a bad product.

Almost every failure starts here
Preparation produces nothing visible, costs real money, and is the first thing removed from a cheap quotation. It is also what decides whether the system lasts.
The deck is cleaned, dried and laid to fall. Laitance is removed, cracks cut and filled, and internal angles filleted. The prepared surface is primed with bitumen primer and allowed to dry before the first bitumen layer.
How we apply bituminous felt waterproofing
Step by step, with the specifications each stage is held to.

Prepare and prime
Deck cleaned, dried, falls established, cracks filled, angles filleted, then primed to full coverage.
- 02
Apply hot bitumen at working temperature
Bitumen is applied at its correct working temperature and monitored. Applied too cool it never bonds; applied too hot it degrades and loses its properties.
- 03
Lay the felt into hot bitumen
Reinforcing felt is bedded into the hot bitumen and brushed down to full contact without trapped air.

Stagger the laps between plies
Successive plies are laid with laps deliberately offset from the layer below. Aligning laps between plies creates a continuous weak line straight through the build-up — the classic built-up roofing failure.

Build up the specified number of plies
Alternating bitumen and felt to the specified number of layers for the duty.
- 06
Dress the surface
A final bitumen dressing with mineral chippings, or a protective screed. Left bare, the bitumen oxidises and cracks under UV far sooner than it needs to.

Flood test
48–72 hour flood test with the space below observed, before any protective layer is laid over it.

None of these are material defects — they are execution defects, which is why the same product can last for years on one building and fail in a single monsoon on another.
How do I know the work was done properly?
Ask for evidence against these checkpoints: bitumen application temperature monitored; lap stagger inspected per ply; ponding test before dressing. A contractor who cannot produce them is asking you to take execution quality on trust, on work that will be buried under a finish and impossible to inspect afterwards.
How long does bituminous felt waterproofing last?
Grade- and ply-dependent. UV exposure without a protective dressing is the main life-shortening factor. We would rather set that expectation honestly than quote a headline number, because the substrate condition and the standard of application matter more to the outcome than the product's own datasheet figure.
What does bituminous felt waterproofing cost in Mumbai?
Cost depends on area, substrate condition, access, and how much preparation or structural repair is needed before the system can go on. We do not publish a rate per square foot, because a number quoted without seeing the building is either meaningless or misleading.
