Lift Pit Waterproofing in Mumbai

Lift pit waterproofing seals the lowest point of a building's shaft, which sits below the water table in most of Mumbai and collects anything that runs down the shaft. Standing water in a lift pit is a safety and equipment issue as much as a building one, so treatment is usually a combination of PU injection to stop active ingress and a tanking system to hold it.

Waterproofing is a selection problem before it is an application problem. Most failures we are called to fix were the wrong system for the substrate, not a bad product.

SURFACE PREPARATION

Almost every failure starts here

Preparation produces nothing visible, costs real money, and is the first thing removed from a cheap quotation. It is also what decides whether the system lasts.

The pit is pumped dry and kept dry throughout the works. Loose material, oil and debris are removed. Active leak paths are mapped while water is still entering, because a dried-out pit hides exactly the paths that need treating. Cracks are cut, and fillets are formed at every wall-to-base junction.

METHOD

How we apply lift pit waterproofing

Step by step, with the specifications each stage is held to.

  1. 01

    Dewater and map while it is still leaking

    The pit is pumped out and the entering paths marked before they stop being visible. A pit surveyed after it has dried gives no information about where the water actually comes in.

  2. 02

    Arrest active ingress by injection

    Polyurethane injection grouting is carried out first, sealing live paths from within the structure. Applying a coating over an active leak is the most common lift-pit failure — the water simply pushes it off.

  3. 03

    Form junction fillets

    A cementitious fillet at every wall-to-base junction, which is where a rigid tanking layer would otherwise thin and crack at the sharp internal angle.

  4. 04

    Apply cementitious tanking

    Two cross-directional coats to a combined 2.0–3.0 mm over walls and base, worked well into the prepared surface.

  5. 05

    Detail the pit ladder and fixings

    Ladder brackets, buffer bases and any fixings through the tanking are individually sealed rather than drilled through afterwards.

  6. 06

    Protective screed where required

    Where buffer and equipment loading demands it, a protective screed is laid over the cured tanking.

  7. 07

    Observe dry for 72 hours

    The pit is observed dry, with pumping stopped, for 72 hours before handover. Sump and pump provision is verified operational where the water table is permanently high.

A contractor who cannot produce them is asking you to take execution quality on trust, on work that will be buried under a finish and impossible to inspect afterwards.

How long does lift pit waterproofing last?

Depends on whether the surrounding water table is permanently or seasonally high. We would rather set that expectation honestly than quote a headline number, because the substrate condition and the standard of application matter more to the outcome than the product's own datasheet figure.
