Underground tank waterproofing must resist water in both directions — the stored water pushing out, and groundwater pushing in. It combines an internal potable-safe lining with external or pre-applied below-grade protection, plus careful treatment of the wall-to-base junction and every pipe penetration.

SURFACE PREPARATION

Almost every failure starts here

Preparation produces nothing visible, costs real money, and is the first thing removed from a cheap quotation. It is also what decides whether the system lasts.

The tank is drained, cleaned and dried as far as the ground conditions allow. Loose material is removed, cracks cut and filled, and fillets formed at every internal angle. Where the tank is being built new, a pre-applied membrane is laid over a level PCC blinding before the raft is cast.

METHOD

How we apply underground water tank (ugt) waterproofing

Step by step, with the specifications each stage is held to.

  1. 01

    Establish which direction the water is moving

    An underground tank is loaded in both directions: stored water pushing out, ground water pushing in. Treating only the inside of a tank that is taking in ground water leaves the external head unresolved and the lining under negative pressure.

  2. 02

    Pre-applied external barrier on new work

    HDPE or equivalent pre-applied membrane at 1.2–2.0 mm laid beneath the raft and against the external faces before casting, so the concrete keys into it.

  3. 03

    Water stops at all construction joints

    Placed centrally in the section at the raft-to-wall junction and every subsequent joint, secured against displacement during the pour.

  4. 04

    Seal penetrations properly

    Inlet, outlet and overflow penetrations receive puddle flanges or proper sealing collars. Mortar packed around a pipe is not a seal and is a routine source of ingress.

  5. 05

    Internal crack treatment and fillets

    Cracks cut and filled, fillets formed at every internal angle before lining.

  6. 06

    Potable-certified internal lining

    Applied in multiple coats to 1.5–2.0 mm where the tank stores drinking water, with the certification retained for handover.

  7. 07

    Fill and drop test

    The tank is filled and the level monitored over a set period to confirm it is holding, with the surrounding structure inspected for external seepage.
