SURFACE PREPARATION

Almost every failure starts here

Preparation produces nothing visible, costs real money, and is the first thing removed from a cheap quotation. It is also what decides whether the system lasts.

Where laid over waterproofing, the barrier must be tested first. The base is cleaned and brought to saturated surface-dry. Panel joint layout is agreed and marked before any concrete is placed, because retro-fitting joints into a cracked screed is not a repair.

METHOD

How we apply ips screeding work

Step by step, with the specifications each stage is held to.

  1. 01

    Agree the joint layout first

    Panel and construction joint positions are set out before the pour. IS screed shrinks as it cures, and shrinkage that has no planned joint to open at will find its own line — randomly, across the finished surface.

  2. 02

    Test and protect the barrier below

    Where the screed protects waterproofing, that barrier is tested and, if the system requires, a separating layer is laid so screed shrinkage does not drag on it.

  3. 03

    Lay to fall at the specified thickness

    Placed at 25–50 mm, compacted and laid to the fall established in the design.

  4. 04

    Float and finish

    Floated to a dense, closed surface. Over-trowelling brings excess fines to the top and produces a surface layer that dusts and crazes.

  5. 05

    Cure without interruption

    Water-cured for 7–14 days. Interrupted curing is the direct cause of the shrinkage crazing seen on much IPS work in Mumbai.

  6. 06

    Re-check falls

    Falls verified after finishing, because they are commonly lost during laying and levelling.
